On a warm summer day, the inside of a cucumber is how many degrees cooler than the air temperature outside?

cucumberThat cucumber will be about 20°F cooler!

That's why this cool, crisp summertime treat is so refreshing on a warm day.

Now that the planting rush has subsided, this will be the first of monthly newsletters for the summer. We do our best to keep the information pertinent to what's going on in your garden. If you have any gardening conundrums or timely topics you would like to see addressed in upcoming issues, feel free to contact us.

This has been a great spring season, and we thank you for your visits here to the farm. Hearing you say, "This is just what I was looking for!" sure makes us happy. We do our best to fill our greenhouses with a wide variety of plants from the most-popular annuals to plants that are a bit more eccentric. And it feels good when we send our "babies" that we've brought to life to thrive in good homes.

Our gift shop is another area where we strive to please. We are always looking for new items for your home and garden to fill the shop. Your feedback and suggestions are vital when searching for new gift shop items and when selecting plants to grow. So, keep your comments coming during the season. Talk to me or David or another member of our staff when you're visiting the farm or drop us an e-mail.

Most of you have been customers for many years, so we would like to share a bit of wonderful news: We are the proud grandparents of a baby girl, "Emma Robyn Frerichs". Our son, David, and his wife, Heather, became parents on May 16. Emma is doing great, and Mommy and Daddy are adjusting to not having much sleep!

Have a fantastic June!

children planting

With children home for the summer or the grand kids visiting, why not give them a plant to be under their own personal care? Perhaps a flower in their favorite color or maybe something they like on their pizza such as tomatoes, peppers or basil.

basil

Basil

This ever-popular herb is easy to grow. Basil has round, often pointed leaves. Its highly fragrant leaves are used as a seasoning herb for a variety of foods but has become very popular as the main ingredient in pesto.
